I was playing ranked twos with a teammate (let’s call him Woof). We gave up an early goal and then another one after I lost a challenge. After that, Woof stopped playing and started spamming toxic messages in the team-only chat like “kys” and insulted me heavily, calling me things like “you f’ing suck” and “braindead.” Normally, I don’t let online insults get to me, but I was having a rough day and it really hit me hard. When I reported him, the chat log only showed some milder insults like “braindead” and a confusing message “t high as a kight,” but not the “kys” message which I know is bannable. So my question is: can players still get banned for toxic or abusive language if it’s only said in team-only chat? Will reporting him lead to any consequences even if the worst stuff doesn’t appear in the chat logs? Thanks! Also, if Woof sees this, I hope you have a better day and maybe rethink your attitude!

Short answer: yes. If the chat is toxic and breaks the rules, it doesn’t matter if it’s team-only or open chat. The system flags and punishes it either way.
Yeah, the rules apply to any kind of chat, including team-only messages. Toxic stuff like “kys” is against the terms of service no matter where it’s said, so getting banned for that is definitely possible.
You can absolutely get banned from party chat or private matches too if you cross the line. If Woof really typed “kys,” that’s essentially an auto-ban trigger right after the game ends.
It’s probably not the first time this guy’s been reported either. From what I’ve seen, most of the trash talking happens in team chats since it feels ‘safer’ for trolls or salty players.
Any chat on Psyonix servers is monitored under the same rules. I actually heard about someone getting banned for using racial slurs even in private matches, so your report should count even if the worst messages aren’t fully visible in the log.
Wow, that’s intense! Didn’t realize private matches were policed that strictly. Makes me feel better about reporting now.
