I’ve closed a few Oblivion gates, including the one in Kvatch, and I’m wondering if it’s possible to just go around and close all the gates without following the main quest line. Will more gates keep appearing if I do that?

Whether new gates keep opening depends on your progression in the main quest. My last character ended up closing 14—felt that was enough for me. My current character started in the Shivering Isles, so no gates for her!
Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend it. I tried to close all the gates once, and by the time I reached gate 60, I was totally burnt out on the game. It just feels like a chore after a while. Now, I only tackle the ones that are tied to quests and focus on the sigil stones I want.
Yeah, same here! I ended up using invisibility and high acrobatics to skip through most of them.
After Kvatch, you can still find around 24 more gates, but you won’t see additional ones until a certain point in the main quest. Just so you know, after hitting that point, a total of 58 gates can appear, mixing some scripted ones with random spawns.
There are 60 Oblivion gates in total. While some are linked to the main story quests, most of them can pop up randomly. So yeah, you can absolutely close those random gates whenever you feel like it! Just don’t forget that you’ll need to complete the Dagon Shrine quest first to unlock all the random spawns.
Good point! You really should finish that Dagon Shrine quest first. It’s essential to unlock all the spawns.
Some gates will only spawn based on where you are in the main quest, but you can still close quite a few of them, probably.
I tried to close them all during my remaster playthrough too, but I quit after about 20 gates—just wasn’t worth the effort.
