I’m thinking about buying my friend’s Meta Quest 1, as she’s trying to sell it. She mentioned that while you can use it to play Steam games, the performance is a bit sluggish and the quality might not be the best. Since I have a solid gaming PC, I’m curious about how to optimize the Quest 1 for Steam games. Also, I learned that the Meta Quest 1 and Oculus Rift are different devices. Which one performs better for Steam gaming? I’m leaning towards retro vibes, but I’m wondering what to expect. Any insights on how to improve the Quest 1’s performance for Steam games would be great!

If you want to make it work well with PCVR, I recommend using Virtual Desktop, but make sure to buy it directly from the headset. You’ll need a good setup: connect your PC to your WiFi router with a wire and have a WiFi 6 router if possible. WiFi 5 might work too, but make sure your router is reliable since the connection impacts performance more than your internet speed.
The Meta Quest 1 is definitely a unique headset. You can use it with Steam games, but don’t set your expectations too high; it’s pretty much a first-gen device that’s better suited for casual gaming. Just be prepared for some performance quirks.
You can definitely use the Quest 1 for Steam games, but keep in mind that it has lower resolution and the dreaded screen door effect. Games like Resident Evil 7 & 8 and Half-Life Alyx can look good due to its OLED screens, though. Just don’t expect to game for long periods since the battery might be worn out, so consider getting a battery pack. Also, make sure it comes with both controllers! If you can snag the headset for $50-70, it’s a decent deal.
