I’m wondering if a digital PS3 game that I bought while using my PS4 can be downloaded and played on my PS5. I’ve heard mixed things about backwards compatibility, particularly whether it works for earlier generations like the PS3. Does anyone know how that works?

Unfortunately, you can’t run PS3 games directly on the PS5. The PS4 didn’t support PS3 games, so if you bought a digital copy, it was likely a port made for PS4. Only a few PS3 games were ported to PS4, and those can play on PS5, but standard PS3 titles can’t be played at all on the newer console.
Yeah, like you said, the PS5 mainly supports PS4 and PS5 games. I had to repurchase some classics like Final Fantasy VII for PS4 to play them on PS5. If you have digital titles available on PS4, you can play those on your PS5.
The only way you might get to play PS3 games on your PS5 is through the PS Now streaming service. If you had a PS3 game on your account, you’d have to stream it to play on the PS5. But if it’s just a regular PS3 game, there’s no backwards compatibility with disc-based versions, since the PS5 won’t read them.
