I know most PlayStation consoles are not backwards compatible—except for the Vita, which is a bummer for me. I’m hoping to play a game from ’06, but I don’t have access to a PS3 or 360. So, what would happen if I tried putting a PS3 disc into my PS4?

If you put a PS3 disc into your PS4, nothing will happen. The PS4 doesn’t support backwards compatibility for PS3 discs, so you’re out of luck there.
Pretty much the same—nothing. It’s interesting to note that most PlayStation consoles allow some level of backwards compatibility. For example, the PS2 can play PS1 games, and some models of the PS3 can play PS2 games. The PS5 has support for PS4 games, but unfortunately, the PS4 is the only main home console that lacks any backwards compatibility for previous generations. It’s a real shame!
