I’m trying to figure out how magic schools work when it comes to leveling them up. I bought this cool spell called Black Winter from the Dark Brotherhood, which paralyzes targets and inflicts frost damage. Even though it has an illusion component because of the paralysis, I’m wondering if I can create a custom spell from the Alteration school that has a healing effect included. If I do this, will I gain experience in Alteration or Restoration? I’ve maxed out my Restoration at level 100 and want to boost my other magic skills by casting healing spells instead.

Great question! The type of school a spell belongs to depends on which effect is the most expensive. So, yes, you can craft a spell with a healing effect in Alteration. Just make sure the alteration effect is the most powerful one in that spell, otherwise, it will level up Restoration instead.
Exactly! The school that levels up will be the one with the strongest effect. If you make sure the Alteration aspect outweighs the healing in cost, you’ll be leveling that skill up. Good luck with your spell crafting!
