Hey everyone! I’m inquiring about whether there’s any kind of external disc drive that would let me use physical game discs on the digital versions of the Xbox consoles (like the Series X or S). I totally enjoy using physical copies, but due to the heat that these consoles generate, I’m looking for something that won’t be inside the Xbox itself. Is there such a thing, or am I just dreaming here?

Unfortunately, there’s no option for an external disc drive for Xbox One or Series X/S. If you want to play disc games, your best bet is purchasing a console that comes with a disc drive. Microsoft hasn’t released any external drives and I wouldn’t expect them to anytime soon.
You could modify something, but it’s really not worth the hassle since it could lead to a security mess. Plus, if you want a disc drive, just get a Series X or a One X that has it. That’ll save you all the trouble!
There currently isn’t an external disc drive for the Xbox consoles. It’s theoretically possible Microsoft might release one, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that. If you’re looking to use physical discs, definitely consider getting a Series X that includes a disc drive.

But I have to ask, how did the Xbox 360 handle security with its external HD DVD drive? That was USB-based too, so I’m curious about how licensing worked with that setup.
