I’m curious if it’s possible to finish the National Pokédex with only my Nintendo Switch and not having a 3DS. I have most of the Pokemon games on Switch, and I’ve registered around 200 Pokemon on Pokemon Home. However, I’m concerned about acquiring the mythical Pokemon and those from later generations like Gen 5, 6, and 7. Has anyone tried doing this?

I started a similar adventure with just my Switch, and I can tell you that no, you can’t complete it entirely. Some Pokémon, especially certain Gen 5 ones like the elemental monkeys and Patrat, aren’t available on the Switch yet. You can trade for them on Pokemon Home, though. I recommend starting your collection now, and once Legends: Arceus comes out, you might get a shot at completing the rest of your Pokédex.
While I managed to complete my own National Dex with just a Switch, it’s tough. I could trade for some specific Gen 5 Pokémon and mythicals that aren’t available on Switch, and used shiny legendaries for trades in communities like Pokémon Home trading. So yes, it’s difficult, but definitely not impossible!
Nope, it’s not fully possible until Legends: Arceus comes out. Right now, the missing ones from your Pokédex are mainly Patrat, the Unova monkeys, and Furfrou. The mythicals you can currently get are quite limited without using older games to unlock them, too.
Theoretically, you could finish it using the Wonder Box on the mobile version of Pokemon Home, but patience is key. There are still some Pokémon locked to the 3DS or earlier that you won’t get without other platforms, especially some mythicals that rely on older game events.
Unfortunately, as of now, some mythical Pokémon can only be obtained from specific events or other games. The current setup does lock a good number of them out, so you’d need to be creative, possibly using Pokémon GO to trade into your entry.
Also, a good tip is to do a living dex in every game you play! Make sure to trade for version-exclusive Pokémon in-game. This will definitely enhance your experience.
