I’m diving into my first ever playthrough of Oblivion, and I’m about 1.5 hours in. I created a High Elf Mage and selected the sign that boosts my magicka by 50 (can’t remember the name). I’ve found myself using a sword a lot since I have hardly any spells at this point, which got me thinking—should I have gone for a spellsword build instead? I initially envisioned my character as a Frieren, focusing mostly on spells while wielding a claymore as a backup. How can I level up this character effectively while sticking to this vision?

Don’t sweat it! This game lets you evolve your character in the later stages, so you won’t be stuck on one path. If you’re worried, just load a save from the sewers and reset your character just before you leave. That’s a nice way to experiment without starting over completely.
You can totally make the switch without restarting! Try using different bladed weapons too, as there are unique enchanted ones to find. Plus, you can enchant your own if you join the Mages Guild and level up your skills a bit.
You can definitely master all skills and attributes in this game, so don’t be shy about mixing it up! Just enjoy the grind and have fun experimenting with what you’re using.
Keep using the skills you enjoy! Even at just 1.5 hours in, you have plenty of time to define your character. The game’s leveling system allows for some flexibility, so no need to feel locked into one play style.
Honestly, no need to start anew. Just start swinging that sword and focus on leveling that skill. The game is pretty forgiving early on, especially since you’re just getting started.
