Hey everyone! My current gamertag is super old and comes from a deep cut reference back in 2007. I missed out on changing it before the whole discriminator thing rolled out, and now I’m wondering: if I change my gamertag now, will I end up with a discriminator? Or do I only get one if someone else has the name I want? If that’s the case, is there a way to check if the new gamertag I want is already taken?

If you’re looking for a unique gamertag, a good tip is to try using random combinations of letters and numbers. Xbox allows you to create new gamertags that don’t have a suffix as long as they’re unique and fit within the character limit. You might even want to try something like a random generated name to see if it’s available!
You can definitely change your gamertag without getting a discriminator. As long as your new one is unique and within the character limit, you should be all set with a clean gamertag. Just make sure to check the availability before finalizing it!
Thanks for the info! That makes me feel a lot better about changing it.
That’s a solid suggestion! I’ll definitely give that a shot.
