I’m dealing with some frustrating charging issues with my PS4 controller and keep getting a “too many USB devices connected” error. My original micro USB cable used to charge my controller but has stopped working, which makes me think there might be a problem with the USB port. I recently bought a used controller that charged but wouldn’t connect to the console, so I returned it and purchased a brand new controller and cable. While it initially worked, the new setup has also started to stop charging while connected. I’m wondering if getting a charging dock would avoid the USB port problems and let me keep gaming. Do you think my PS4 is still okay and the USB port is just faulty?

I’m in the same boat! I figured out that my console’s USB ports are causing the charging issue too. I’ve been charging my controller using my partner’s PS4 in the meantime. A charging dock sounds like a solid solution! If you go for it, let us know if it works out for you. I’ve searched everywhere for a definitive fix but found nothing!
You can definitely charge your PS4 controller using a regular wall charger, you don’t have to plug it into the console. However, just a heads up, not all chargers are safe. Using an adapter that exceeds 5V can potentially damage the controller. Stick with something like an old iPhone charger or a basic block from a store like Dollar Tree, but the safest bet is to charge directly from the PS4 if you’re unsure.
