Hey everyone! My brother is really into Guild Wars 2 and just hit max level. I want to buy him the expansions as a gift, but the full set is around 100 euros, which is a bit steep for me right now. I’ve seen it available at a lower price on key-selling sites. The keys say they need to be redeemed on the official site, but my brother usually plays via Steam. If I buy these keys and he redeems them while logged into his Steam account, will he be able to unlock the expansions, or does he have to download GW2 from the official site? Thanks a ton, and sorry if my English isn’t perfect—it’s not my first language!

The keys you buy won’t work with the Steam version, and there’s a chance that using them elsewhere could get his account banned. The next sale is likely from March 13-20, and during that time the Complete Collection might be 50% off, so it’s worth waiting for the sale!
Remember, GW2 content doesn’t really get outdated, so there’s no rush to buy everything at once. Your brother would get plenty of playtime out of any single expansion. Just get him what you can; I’m sure he’ll appreciate it!
Consider getting him a Steam gift card instead. Then he can choose the expansions himself. If you’re looking at gifts, the Elder Dragon Saga Complete Collection is a fantastic deal for everything it includes. Just make sure he purchases it on Steam; if he starts buying others separately, he might miss out on deals later.
To buy the expansions, he would need to use Steam for the keys you purchase. You don’t need to spend the entire 100 euros just yet; the first three expansions alone have loads of content that should keep him entertained.
Thanks for the clarification!
Unfortunately, if your brother is playing through Steam, he’ll need to buy the expansions via Steam itself. Keys from other sites typically work only on ArenaNet accounts, which might cause issues for Steam users. Also, make sure you buy from approved sellers in the future because using unauthorized keys can lead to account bans. Just a heads-up!
Got it, thanks for the warning!
Make sure he enjoys the storyline too! Maybe just get him the first couple of expansions like Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire. He could easily get a year or more of fun from those!
He mentioned he enjoyed the story a lot, so that sounds like a good plan!
Thanks, that’s super helpful!
