I’ve recently found more free time for gaming thanks to a better work-life balance and I’m interested in diving into solo games for PC or the Switch. I’m open to pretty much any genre or style! I’ve looked at some popular titles like the Fallout series, Baldur’s Gate 3, Battle Brothers, The Last of Us, Nier, and Skyrim and would love to hear people’s strong opinions or recommendations on these or anything else worth trying.

On Switch and PC, definitely try Fallout 4 and Skyrim if you want accessible and rewarding open-world RPGs. They’re great entry points if you’re interested in those series. If you’re curious about similar vibes, games like The Outer Worlds, Control, Jedi Fallen Order, and Mafia Definitive Edition are also solid solo action/adventure picks worth checking out.
If I had to pick my top 3 to recommend from what you mentioned plus a few extras, I’d say The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt for its deep story and vast world, Red Dead Redemption 2 for immersive open-world vibes, and God of War (2018 or Ragnarok) for a stellar mix of action and narrative. All three really shine for solo players looking for a rich experience.
Thanks for narrowing it down! Those all sound fantastic, especially the story-driven ones. I’ll definitely check them out.
If you’re on PC, give Portal a shot. It’s a classic solo puzzle game that’s quick, fun, and has aged super well. A nice change of pace if you want something different from big RPGs or action games.
Totally agree that the Mass Effect trilogy is a must-play solo series. Also, Cyberpunk 2077 is surprisingly immersive once you explore the city. For something more offbeat, check out Disco Elysium — it’s super unique and deep, though not everyone’s cup of tea, but the art and story are incredible.
Cool, Disco Elysium caught my eye because of the art style you mentioned. I’ll give it a go soon! Appreciate the suggestions.
If you’re open to adding a couple more series, the Yakuza games are fantastic solo stories with lots of side content. Monster Hunter is another, though it’s often multiplayer, you can absolutely enjoy it solo. Both offer big, rewarding experiences outside your original list.
Thanks for the insight! Would you say Yakuza or Monster Hunter fits better if I want a more narrative-driven solo experience?
Do you think I’ll miss much if I skip earlier Fallout or Elder Scrolls games and go straight to the newer ones like Fallout 4 and Skyrim? Thanks!
