Hey everyone! I’m running a few historical campaigns set in a medieval context and I’m exploring new RPG systems to use. My campaigns typically focus on low or no fantasy elements, spanning time periods from around 600 to 1400 AD. I’m looking for a ruleset that’s not too complicated, doesn’t lean heavily on combat, and can support larger group dynamics or mass battles without a heroic or high power level. I’d appreciate suggestions for systems that are easy to modify and perhaps even classless or levelless. Thanks a lot!

If you’re open to a bit of a mix, consider Mythras. It’s great for detailed swordfighting and has adjustable supernatural elements. You can tailor the game to fit a timeline that’s heavier on the swordplay and lighter on other magic aspects.
You should definitely check out Pendragon! It has very limited magic, so you can really focus on the historical aspects. Plus, it provides a lot of options for arms and armor from various time periods, which is perfect if you’re playing outside of Arthurian times.
Chivalry & Sorcery is another solid option that leans heavily on historical play. While it does include magic, it’s more about academic and subtle enchantments rather than over-the-top spells. If you’re into historical accuracy, it offers a nice balance.
GURPS and Fate Core both have really good mass battle rules and can handle low power levels easily. GURPS is a bit heavier on the rules, but it’s super versatile, while Fate Core offers more flexibility if you’re looking to customise your experience.
I’m curious about Fate Core! I’ve never really looked into it. Maybe I should give that a shot next week.
Totally agree! Pendragon lets you drop any magical components entirely if you want. It’s a great choice for that historical feel!
