I’m looking for a modern game controller that closely mimics the original N64 controller’s button layout for playing emulated N64 games with my kids. I know the classic three-handle design is pretty unusual and might confuse them. I’ve heard the GameCube controller could be a possible fit, but it’s been ages since I last used one. I also have a USB to N64 port adapter, though I believe the GameCube connectors differ from the N64’s. Any recommendations for a controller that balances modern comfort but keeps the N64 feel?

Honestly, as strange as they look, the original N64 controllers are really the best for N64 games. They’re not as awkward as they seem once you get used to them. Since you already have a USB to N64 adapter, using the real deal might give you and your kids the authentic experience and probably the best feel for the games.
The GameCube controller is a decent substitute since it packs all the buttons you need, though it doesn’t have the exact analogue triggers or the exact C button layout of the N64. You can remap two of the C buttons to X and Y on the GameCube pad since many games mostly use just the down and left C buttons. Just be aware the connectors are different, so USB adapters for N64 won’t work with GameCube controllers. Also, the GameCube’s analog stick feels different, but emulator settings can help adjust sensitivity.
I’ve been following this too and 8bitdo is actually releasing a modern-style N64 controller alongside the Analogue 3D console. While no one has tested it yet, it looks promising and could be exactly what you’re after for that N64 button layout with modern build quality. Definitely keep an eye out for that release.
If you want something made specifically to replicate the N64 experience but with a modern feel, check out options like the Tribute 64, Brawler64, or the Admiral controller. These are designed with the N64 button layout in mind, so you get all the buttons without compromise. The Brawler64 Bluetooth NSO Edition, for example, is wireless and reviewed pretty well. Honestly though, if you can get your hands on an original N64 controller, those weird three handles and unique stick are part of what makes N64 gaming so iconic and great.
