I’m trying to get my friend into the Final Fantasy series, and I want them to have a solid understanding of the franchise as a whole. Which three games would you recommend they start with, and how should I guide them on which one to play first? I’m currently thinking Final Fantasy VI, VII, and X, but I’m open to suggestions! Just a heads up, they enjoy RPGs and appreciate a good story.

I’d recommend one game from each era: IV or VI for the classics, VII for the PS1 era, and X for the PS2/PS3 era. If they might like the Ivalice universe, XII is great too. But definitely save XIII for later; it can be a bit off-putting for newcomers. It’s all about what you think they’d enjoy!
I’d suggest giving them Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Mystic Quest, and Dirge of Cerberus. Tactics Advance offers a unique strategy element that might be appealing, while Mystic Quest is quite accessible for newcomers. Dirge of Cerberus gives a different perspective on the FFVII story. But hey, those choices might seem a bit niche!
They seem interesting! Just wanted to provide a range of experiences.
For a solid introduction, I’d definitely go with VI, X, and maybe even XVI. VI is a classic, showcasing the charm of the pixel era, while X gives a glimpse of modern storytelling without losing the JRPG roots. XVI offers insights into the new direction the series is heading, which is pretty cool if they end up liking it! Just be cautious with VII; it’s a big deal and might oversaturate their experience right away since there’s so much tie-in content.
This is a tricky question since everyone has preferences, but I’d suggest:
1. Final Fantasy IX – it’s a love letter to the series’ roots and has iconic characters.
2. X and X-2 – they perfectly blend story and strategic gameplay.
3. XII – this one gives them a taste of a more action-oriented approach. Just a heads up, I’d avoid II, XI, and XIV for a first-timer.
Honestly, I think Final Fantasy X is probably the best all-around choice. It has a great story, solid combat, and loads of side quests. If they love classic stuff, then VI is perfect too! Just bear in mind, X’s exploration can feel a bit linear, but the experience is really rewarding.
Haha, great picks! What made you choose those three?
