Hey everyone! I’m using Garuda Dr460nized Gaming and looking for recommendations on the best compatibility layer tools to run games on Linux. I’ve heard about Bottles, Heroic, Lutris, and of course Steam Proton. For folks experienced with Linux gaming, which tool do you find works best and why? Also curious about handling games from various sources like GOG, Epic, Uplay, Origin, or even originals from CD/DVD. Thanks a lot!

If you’re mainly playing Steam games, Steam Proton is hands down the simplest option since it’s built-in and optimized. For games from Epic or GOG, Heroic is a solid pick – it’s user-friendly and tailored for those libraries. For Uplay or Origin titles and especially for games on CD/DVD, Lutris is really versatile and supports custom configs well.
Honestly, the best tool depends on your game sources. Steam games? Stick with Proton. Epic games? Heroic tends to handle those best. For everything else, including classic games from discs or less common platforms, Lutris gives you the most control and flexibility. You can even mix and match tools or add games to Steam as non-Steam entries if that helps organize your library.
At the end of the day, these tools are all managing Wine and Proton stuff under the hood, so pick whichever UI you like best and that fits your workflow. Some might hate Bottles (like me), others swear by it, so try a few out and see what feels right!
If you’re new to this, Heroic might be the way to go since its interface is simple and intuitive. I personally used Lutris for ages and stuck with it because I know all its quirks, but I have to admit Heroic’s UI is cleaner and easier to get started with.
Good to know! I appreciate the suggestion since I am still getting used to these tools.
That really clears things up, thanks! I was worried I’d have to stick to just one tool but mixing sounds better.
