Hey Oblivion fans! I’m diving into the remastered version and I could really use some advice. Which skills do you think take the longest to level up? Is it different from the original version?
I know leveling has changed a bit, but I want to optimize my build. Specifically, I want to focus on the slower skills for a nice boost, and I’m looking for classes that have more slow skills to aid that. I’m aiming for a jack of all trades, master of none kind of character.
Also, do you think I can make enough gold to rely on skill trainers, or is that even necessary anymore?
Lastly, I’m torn between light and heavy armor. Which one do you prefer for looks? Is the movement penalty for heavy armor still a big deal like it used to be, or does the extra defense and style make it worth it? Would it be crazy to consider taking both as major skills?

I’d say pickpocket and mercantile take a bit longer to level, and you just have to grind through them. Just a heads up, wearing heavy armor affects your spell effectiveness, making spells less powerful. I prefer light armor since it doesn’t impact spells as much, plus it fits my play style as a spell sword.
Spell effectiveness is still a factor, but you should be okay as a jack of all trades. Just curious, did you find armor skills leveling fast enough as minors?
So, about the main skills leveling up faster? Yeah, that’s definitely the case! You get an initial +20 level boost for major skills, making them level up quicker than minor ones. Also, your specialization gives a +5 level bonus to all skills in that category, so if you go Thief, for instance, your Thief skills will improve faster. It’s an interesting twist, but the exact percentages are still up for debate. Some folks are trying to dig into the Creation Kit data for specifics, though!
Totally! With the new leveling system, classes aren’t as critical as they used to be. You can actually level up from minor skills now, which opens up more options. I ended up opting out of both armors as major skills since I wasn’t sure which one I liked better.
