Hey everyone! I recently started playing Baldur’s Gate 3 and I’m loving how each choice really impacts the story. Since I’m new to Dungeons & Dragons as well, I’m a bit lost and would appreciate some beginner tips to help me level up and get through Act 1 more smoothly. My character, Tav, is currently a level 4 Sorcerer and I’m playing on PS5. Any advice on spells, combat tactics, or general gameplay would be awesome!

One solid damage combo early on is using the wet condition followed by a lightning spell, since lightning does double damage to wet enemies. Spells like Create Water combined with Chromatic Orb can be devastating. If you have any Tempest Clerics in your party, their abilities can make lightning spells hit max damage—perfect for wiping out tough foes fast!
Here’s a bit of a meta tip: getting familiar with basic DnD 5e rules like ability checks, skill checks, attack rolls, and saving throws will help you understand the game much better. Also, as a Sorcerer, you only get to learn two new spells per level, so if a spell doesn’t click with you, consider talking to Withers to respec your class and pick different spells. You can even pick his pockets for gold to fund your experiments without any real penalty, so you can try out different builds to see what fits your style.
Definitely explore every nook and cranny in each map before moving on. Don’t rush out of the first area without finishing up all tasks and exploring thoroughly—it pays off in loot and experience!
As a Sorcerer, make sure to grab spells that boost your defense and survivability. For example, Mage Armor and Shield as a reaction are super useful if you’re not wearing heavier armor. Also, if you get to level 3 spell slots, snag Counterspell to shut down enemy spells. Setting your reactions to always ask you helps you decide the best moment to use them.
If you’re new to DnD rules like me, spend some time reading all the descriptions and conditions carefully. Combat starts to make more sense about halfway through Act 2. Also, small damage bonuses (like a +1d4) add up — don’t underestimate them. When it comes to resting, don’t be scared to take long rests; there’s plenty of food, so you can keep your spells refreshed. Also, stat increases really matter when you hit even numbers (going from 10 to 11 doesn’t boost your abilities, but 10 to 12 does).
Thanks for the detailed explanation! That respec trick sounds super helpful since I’ve been stuck with some spells I don’t enjoy.
