I’m diving into a complete marathon of the Final Fantasy series for the first time, though I’ve dabbled in a few games like FF7 and FF5. One thing that’s struck me is how little impact White Mages and White Magic seem to have. They primarily heal and remove status ailments, but I can’t recall a time when using White Magic was more effective than just popping items. I appreciate their cool outfits, but are they really as pointless as they seem, or has anyone found them to be game-changers at any point? (And no, I’m not counting instances where you ran out of items – that’s on you!)

Honestly, it really varies by game. In older titles, when healing items were scarce, White Mages were essential. But with the remasters being easier, they do seem less necessary now. That said, in FF13, you really need them for tougher battles, since you can’t rely on items alone. Plus, I prefer using spells over items to conserve my supplies!
In my experience, White Mages can be lifesavers, especially in games like FF4. Rosa’s healing was crucial during those final dungeon fights. Without her keeping the party alive, I doubt many players would have made it through without a lot of grinding or luck!
Same here! I love the challenge of managing resources, so I see the value in having a White Mage.
