Hey everyone! My son and I just jumped into Minecraft survival mode on the Nintendo Switch, and we’re loving it. We managed to build a cozy house, complete with a roof (which felt like a big achievement!). Right now, we’re on a mission to find some shipwrecks to get iron, but I read that we need to have structures enabled for them to spawn in our world. This got me curious about our island setup.
Are there any villages in our world, or are we just stuck with these wandering traders? Do we need to download any extra packs for that? Thanks in advance for your input!

It sounds like you’re having a blast! Just to clear things up, if you’re playing on Bedrock Edition (which is the case on Switch), you can’t turn off structures, so both shipwrecks and villages should naturally occur in your world. But you may have to explore a bit to find a village. The traders could be wandering villagers, and they don’t have homes if there are no villages around. You might want to set sail and see if you can find new islands that might have villages. Happy exploring!
Haha, I get the confusion! Those ‘homeless’ traders you’re seeing are likely villagers who just lack a spawn point. To find actual villages, you might need to venture out by boat and check other islands. And as for iron, yeah, you can actually find it underground too. Just check out levels Y=15 and Y=232 for the best mining spots!
I found loads of iron just strip mining. Way easier than hunting for shipwrecks. You’re on the right track!
There’s also a sneaky way to get iron: find a village with an iron golem! Just make sure to build up three blocks while you take it out, as they hit pretty hard! It’s an efficient way to get what you need.
Funny you mention exploring; I found my first village by just sailing around for a bit! Let the ocean guide your adventure!
