I just noticed that Final Fantasy V is unique because it has more female characters in the main cast than male characters. This strikes me as unusual because, in most Final Fantasy games I can think of, the male characters seem to outnumber the female ones. It feels like this might be the trend across other JRPGs as well. I’m curious if there are any other Final Fantasy titles or games that defy this norm by featuring more female characters.

You might want to consider FFX-2! It has a female-led cast. But some folks here think sequels like that shouldn’t count as mainline games, which is kinda odd to me. It’s like debating if Brotherhood counts as part of Assassin’s Creed.
Mystic Quest has a decent balance with half of the heroes being female warriors. And if we talk about the proportions, many of the earlier games had a standard number of female characters in the party lineup, sticking to three usually.
FF13 also has a good mix with Lightning, Fang, and Vanille versus the guys. Others like FF12 and 14 have equal representation, depending on the expansion. Don’t forget, in FF14, many expansions focus on key female characters, which really stands out!
Absolutely! Characters like Kan-E-Senna and Yoshida add to that strong female presence in XIV.
Yeah, I get that! It’s a gray area, especially since some sequels are direct extensions of their stories.
