I’ve noticed that Zack had his moment in a squat contest in Crisis Core, and Cloud did squats in the remake. So I’m curious, is squatting something that’s exclusive to SOLDIERs, or is it more of a Zack thing? Also, if someone did those squats regularly in real life, would it actually provide a good workout?

In the original Crisis Core, there’s definitely an implication that squatting is a quirk of Zack’s—something he does almost without thinking. It adds to his energetic personality! Cloud’s squats in the remake kind of foreshadow this too, since he’s imitating Zack.
About those squats, a lot of people do them wrong, especially Zack. He swings his arms too much, which makes it less effective than regular squats. But hey, it’s still better than nothing! If someone really struggled with bodyweight squats, this could help them keep their back straight and reduce stress on their hips and knees.
For sure, it’s definitely a Zack thing. If you’re into the lore, you’ll learn even more about it in Part 3 of the series!
In Rebirth, there’s a sidequest that hints it’s more of a Zack thing, implying he has a unique style to it.
I think it’s tied to training for Shinra soldiers. Bodyweight squats are actually fantastic for working out! They target your quads, glutes, and core, burning calories efficiently. While the arm swinging Zack does isn’t ideal, it can help support those who need it to get out of the squat easier.
That’s a good point! While the form might be off, it’s still a solid way to work out. I wonder if that squat style is common in Japan or if it’s just a unique quirk for the characters.
