I’ve been playing Sea of Thieves for a while now, and I just got back into it recently. I noticed something strange: I’ve been turning in a lot of sailor and captain chests, but captain chests seem to be giving me way less gold than they used to. I’m getting about 900 to 1,200 gold for most captain chests, and if I’m lucky, maybe up to 1,500. On the other hand, sailor chests are giving me more, typically around 1,700 to 2,200, and I’ve even hit 2,500 a few times. Did I miss something, or has the value of these chests changed?

You’re not going crazy! There was an update that changed how some of the loot works. You might be confusing captain’s chests with seafarer’s chests, which look similar but have different values. The new loots being introduced often sell for more than the captain’s chests, which might explain the discrepancy you’re seeing.
What you’re experiencing is mostly due to the random nature of loot value. Captain chests traditionally range from 600 to 1,000 gold, so the fluctuations you’re seeing are normal. Just remember, there’s a lot of variance in what you can earn from each turn-in!
Thanks for clearing that up! But I’m still wondering why they didn’t buff the captain’s chests too.
