Hey everyone! I just started a new character and chose the commando build, but I’ve been running into serious ammo issues. I’m level 20 now and my weapon feels more like a semi-automatic, but my skills seem geared towards automatic fire. As I’ve leveled up to 50, every enemy takes a crazy amount of bullets to go down, and I usually only get a few rounds back as loot. I feel like I’m constantly in bullet debt! Am I doing something wrong? I’ve tried daily ops and exposition, but they follow the same frustrating pattern. Any tips for avoiding this ammo drought?

Honestly, starting with the pre-made characters can be a bummer. I tried them too and went back to leveling a character from scratch because it just feels better. It’s actually pretty easy to hit level 20 in just a couple of hours, so don’t stress too much about it. What I’ve found is that setting up your camp near low-level spawn areas makes a huge difference. You can set up turrets to help you farm ammo from enemies while you aren’t actively playing. Plus, if you switch to ultracite ammo, it can cut down your overall usage remarkably.
I made a level 20 commando too, and I got a full-auto combat rifle as my primary. Make sure to use your hunting rifle periodically as well, even if it’s not your main weapon. At level 50, it’s totally normal to feel like you’re drowning in ammo debt, especially if your build isn’t fully optimized yet. Adding better mutations and legendary perks can significantly help your damage. If you haven’t done it yet, definitely run around in groups for daily ops—loot what your teammates kill to keep your stock up!
Have you tried using the Luck ammo perk? It really helps with finding more ammo from enemy drops. And you might want to check out those green supply containers scattered around. Do you use VATS or go for free aim when shooting? Those can impact how efficiently you use your ammo.
I use both VATS and free aim, but it’s tricky. With VATS, I can get criticals in 3-4 bullets, but usually, I end up needing at least six to take down a target. It’s frustrating, and it doesn’t seem to matter what caliber I’m using—.32, .45, 5.56—they’re all a pain. Right now, I’m stuck with a railway rifle and a Gauss rifle, but even shotguns aren’t yielding much ammo back.
I get what you’re saying about starting fresh. Right now, I have a level 50 anti-armor handmade rifle with decent mods, but I still struggle with ammo. Maybe I need to rethink my strategy with the camp and farming!
