I’ve been running a 3080 10 GB with a 9800 X 3D, but the recent NVIDIA launch debacle has me considering AMD for my next GPU. Hiding the 5080 reviews until the last minute and scant availability for the 5090, plus that hefty $2000 price tag, has really put me off! What AMD GPUs would be a significant upgrade from a 3080, especially for playing games at 1440p 240hz and 4K 144hz?

Interestingly, compared to your 3080, these options fare a lot better: the 7900 XTX is about 52% faster, the 7900 XT about 31%, and the 7900 GRE clocks in roughly 11% faster. If you’re planning on playing at high resolutions and want a noticeable improvement, the 7900 XTX would be the way to go. Despite being not new, it’s the most substantial upgrade currently. If ray tracing isn’t your priority, you can push it to its limits with other settings easily.
Before you make the leap, consider if you need ray tracing. Unfortunately, some games are making it non-negotiable, and AMD GPUs, while solid, aren’t quite up there yet with NVIDIA on ray tracing. So if you’re big into ray tracing features, AMD might not satisfy your cravings, and you might be stuck sticking with higher NVIDIA prices despite wanting to switch.
If you’re looking for a noticeable upgrade from your 3080 with AMD, the 7900 XTX definitely stands out. It’s considerably more powerful, though it’s already a couple of years old, so don’t expect any shiny new tech. As for what AMD might release next, it looks like they’ve been quiet, probably due to NVIDIA’s latest moves. Maybe keep an eye out for the rumored 9070 XT; it’s supposed to have performance matching the 7900 XTX, but there’s no concrete info on its release or pricing yet.
