I’ve watched playthroughs of every Resident Evil game and caught all the movies, but I’m wondering if that makes me a fake fan just because I don’t own the actual games. People seem really into gatekeeping whether you’re a true fan or not, and it feels weird. I’m low on cash right now and also in the middle of moving, so buying the games isn’t an option for me. I’m not living independently or working at the moment. I get that some fans really obsess over characters and lore, but isn’t being a fan more about enjoying the content? Why do some fans make it a competition? Is there something wrong with being new to the series?

Watching the games and movies means you’re a fan in my book! The idea of a “fake fan” is pretty silly. Just remember, once you can, definitely try to play the games yourself—nothing beats the real experience!
Not at all! Don’t let anyone make you feel like a “fake fan” just because you haven’t played the games. Many people can’t afford them or might not have a console, and that’s totally okay. You can definitely be a fan by just enjoying the series through watching.
Exactly! The person you talked to sounds more like a collector than a real fan if they don’t get what people go through financially.
