Hey fellow gamers! I’m new to Guild Wars 2 and super excited to dive in, especially since mounts were one of the main reasons I wanted to play! I recently got the starter DLC pack which includes Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire, and I’m really eager to collect all the mounts.
I know that with my current DLCs, I can unlock the Raptor, Springer, Skimmer, and Griffon. However, to get the Roller Beetle and Skyscale, I believe I need to access Living World Season 4. I also heard that the Secrets of the Obscure (SotO) DLC provides a more straightforward way to unlock the Skyscale.
So here’s where I’m a bit lost:
1. Can I just get the Season 4 of Living Worlds just to unlock the mounts?
2. Would it be better to go for SotO first if I’m mainly interested in getting the Skyscale?
I don’t want to be overwhelmed, as I’m planning to explore this game for a while. Hopefully, getting some advice will help me choose the best direction! Thanks a ton!

I really recommend going for the Skyscale unlock through Living World Season 4 if you’re planning to get all expansions sometime. It’ll give you access to masteries that are easier with the new content. Plus, if you get the Skyscale via SotO, you’ll miss out on those extra masteries in LW4. Long story short, LW4 is just a better long-term investment for your mounts!
Yeah, ANet hardly revisits old content, so stick with the new for less work later!
Getting the Skyscale from Living World 4 requires all currencies from that content, which can be a tough grind, whereas SotO is quicker but skips some story elements. Just keep in mind that you’ll need everything from LW4 for certain masteries later on, especially if you aim for the legendary accessory Vision.
Thanks for the answer! Just to clarify, it’s okay to just get Living World Season 4, correct? I can skip LW1 to LW3?
Living World Seasons are like smaller expansions that fill in the gaps between the major ones. They add maps, stories, and features but can be bought directly with real money or gold. If you’re following the story, you’ll naturally play through the Living World Seasons before hitting expansions anyway, so try to take your time with it! For the Roller Beetle, just play episode 3 of LW4, but for Skyscale, you need all 6 episodes or just get SotO.
Thank you so much for this!
Thanks for the nuanced answer! I think with the insight you’re offered, I’m leaning more towards getting the Skyscale through the Living World method.
