I’m on the hunt for my next retro console and I’m particularly drawn to those that didn’t quite make it big. The 3DO has always struck me as fascinating due to its quirky library filled with PC ports, cheesy FMV games, and some hidden gems, plus those exclusive titles from Japan. I typically lean more towards home consoles, but I’m also considering the Neo Geo Pocket Color for handheld gaming. I’ve heard it has some cool games like Sonic, and I love the idea of the camo blue model—I think it would look awesome paired with my blue camo pants! So, I’d really appreciate your insights and experiences with both consoles, and which one you’d recommend. Any additional thoughts or details about them would be great!

While I don’t have much experience with handhelds like the Neo Geo Pocket, I can speak to the 3DO. You can actually burn CDs for it, which makes it fun to try out games—some are hits and some misses. Personally, Road Rash is a must-play on the 3DO! If you’re into quirky gaming, it’s worth considering. Just keep in mind that it can serve more as a conversation piece than a console you’ll play every day since its library isn’t as robust as some others.
If you do lean towards the 3DO, I recommend checking out mods that let you load games from USB if the laser ever fails!
Isn’t the 3DO kind of like a PC in console form?
I’d say the Neo Geo Pocket Color has the better game library overall, and it’s usually cheaper to collect for too. There’s a lot of quality to be found among its titles, making it a fantastic choice!
The Neo Geo Pocket Color has an amazing joystick – it’s super satisfying to use. Honestly, if you want something solid to play with, I’d go for that over the 3DO. Plus, it seems to have a lot of fun games.
You’ve got some solid picks there! I’ve got a Sega Saturn and have enjoyed a lot from the 3DO like Road Rash and D. Its library is definitely funky!
