The beloved Japanese RPG series, Lunar, which first graced North American gaming shelves in 1993, is returning with a remastered collection. Known for its captivating animated cinematic cutscenes, engaging storylines, and memorable voice acting and music, Lunar quickly garnered a dedicated fanbase that has endured over the decades.
Following its initial success, the series expanded to include sequels such as Lunar: Eternal Blue, with new iterations and remakes appearing across various platforms. These included the PlayStation, where remakes brought new life to the series, and a notable release on the PSP. Now, more than 30 years later, both Lunar and Lunar 2 are set to receive a fresh coat of paint in the upcoming Lunar Remastered Collection.
The remaster will be based on the “Complete” versions that were available on the PlayStation, selected for their fidelity to the series’ most celebrated features. This chosen version aims to deliver not only nostalgia but also an improved gaming experience through various quality-of-life enhancements. Players can look forward to features such as adjustable battle speeds, a unified inventory system, and customizable AI behavior that underpin the revamped gameplay mechanics, making them more accessible to both veterans and newcomers alike.
Graphical improvements are a significant highlight, with the remaster showcasing updated graphics, a refreshed user interface, and animated cutscenes reimagined with modern technology. These updates are complemented by a new screen aspect ratio suitable for contemporary TVs, ensuring an optimal visual display. However, for those who yearn for a taste of nostalgia, a “Classic Mode” is included, allowing players to switch back to the original PlayStation graphics and experience the game with a CRT filter for authenticity.
As part of the revamping process, the game will feature a new voice cast. Notably, the vocal songs are performed by the voice actresses of Luna and Lucia, crafted to align closely with the spirit of the original Japanese version. Contributing to this revival is original staff member and character designer Toshiyuki Kubooka, who has been actively involved in the project. Kubooka has created new art pieces, infusing the remaster with the same creative essence that characterized the originals.
The Lunar Remastered Collection not only revitalizes the series for existing fans but also marks a significant milestone by making Lunar 1 and 2 Complete available to European audiences for the first time. This collection aims to preserve the nostalgic charm and unique spirit of the original games while inviting a new generation of players to embark on these classic RPG adventures.
