Video game characters usually get it pretty easy in life, they are usually good looking, fit, charismatic and when they do something wrong it usually get brushed under the rug and they get to go on do whatever they want.
But what if some we were to give game characters a prison sentence for all of the crime they commit? What would they be charged with and how long could they be banged up for?
Before we start, we need to agree how long a life sentence is in years, most countries come in around 25 years per life sentence, so we will take 25 years as our standard.
If you only count the assassinations we have played in the games and if the missions were performed perfectly only killing the target character, Agent 47 has killed well over 50 people, which means there is no way around the fact that he is going to be banged up for a long time
There was no precedence for a killer with 50 murder under his belt for me to use as a benchmark, but what i did find is a pattern of at least one life sentence per murder. also a with contract killers, who ever hired the killer often is sentenced with life in prison, which means that Agent 47 getting busted is a big deal for a lot of people. 50 + life sentences (1250 years)
In her earlier games Lara was quite trigger happy and it became a staple in the Tomb raider series to dispatch any animals the got between her and some shiny loot, so along her travels she did thin out the ranks of some already endangered species so much could she be charged with ? Well according to The Endangered Species Act, “any persons who bring danger or death to an endangered animal can receive fines up to †and can spend up to one year in jail in addition to their fine. Since lady croft is pretty minted, the fines are kinda useless, so jail time is the only thing that can affect Lara. and with the sheer amount of tigers and gorillas that she has popped a cap in over the years she could looking at some serious time.
We have to consider that some of the animals killed were in self defence, But it is also hard to justify lara traveling to the great wall and killing 14 tigers all as self defense so we have to draw the line somewhere. So let’s just say two charges per game where she killed an endangered species.
8 years and in fines
Jackson “Jack” Rourke (Need for speed: The run)
they are probably worse examples of illegal street racing games, but Need for Speed: the run is the only one I found with a named character. Jackson rourke would probably be charged with illegal racing and reckless endangerment, both which carry little to no jail time. a first time charge of reckless endangerment can often be punishable by community service and street racing on the severe end is anywhere between 3 to 9 months prison time.
For arguments sake let’s say jackson gets charged with the worse degree of both crimes, he gets off pretty easy compared to most of the other people on this list.
9 months prison time and losing his driving license
Sly is a master thief and over the course of the series has robbed countless treasures, but there is one problem with sly and that is he often steals from other criminals or steals back items belonging to his family, so not all of his heists can be treated equal. But that wouldn’t matter to carmelita fox so why should it matter to us, we want justice !
Art thieves tends to sentenced a bit lighter than most other major crimes and this time a have a nice example to help me. in 2012, two romanian men, Radu Dogaru and Eugen Darie were sentenced to 6 and a half years each for stealing two monet and a picasso paintings. so lets say sly does on average 5 heists a game he is looking at some decent time in the big house.
42 years in prison
Origami Killer (Heavy Rain)
Don’t worry we won’t reveal the identity of the origami killer or spoil heavy rain in anyway, we will just talk about his crimes before the events of the game. Eight cases of missing children and then their deaths are linked to the origami killer.
The minimum jail time for a first degree kidnapping is about 6 years along with the fact every victim that has been found dead adds murder on top of his jail time. also if you include the events from the game the rap sheet gets even longer.
48 years in prison for kidnapping and 200 years + (8 life sentences) for murders of the children
The GGs (Jet Set Radio )
The GGs biggest crime is property damage, between the graffiti and random smashing they are more than likely looking at felony level charge rather than a misdemeanor (Felony level charges are damages in excess of 300 bucks ). felony level charges often result in the punishment of a year in prison or fine.
With the GGs probably not considered the richest people we are looking at some prison time, but not that much. but hey the police of neo tokyo could probably pin something else on them
1 year in prison and community service
Trevor (Grand Theft Auto 5)
Where do i even start with this guy, even if you played grand theft like a saint, the things trevor gets up to before you get control of him and what happens during the cutscenes means there is so much on his rap sheet that he would never see the light of day again.
There is one hope for trevor, claiming criminal insanity and with some of his actions he could easily convince a judge he is not right in the head, that being said if he does claim insanity there is nope in hell he would ever get out and would probably be drugged up for the rest of his life.
Life without parole in a mental institute or countless years in a normal prison
Aiden Pearce (Watchdogs)
Even though the game isn’t out yet, Aiden pearce is setting up to one of the biggest hackers in gaming history, with an entire city under his control surely he would do some serious time if he ever got caught. Cyber crime charges vary wildly based who was the victim, with government and banking hacking leading to the biggest charges. Aiden has hacked everything banking information, phone records , the electric systems and the personal details of an entire city, so it makes it hard to find some to base my research on.
With the average jail time for a large cyber attack against single system or organization is around 3 years, so if we take the fact that he really only attacked ctOS he is looking at the same kind of time. But hey he could always hack the police records and get community service picking up trash.
3 years +
