Harry Potter Themed Escape Room Plan

Your mission is to find the hidden horcruxes to defeat Voldemort within one hour. There are three rooms to navigate – The Room of Requirement, The Forbidden Forest, and Gringotts Wizarding Bank.

Required Materials

  • Hogwarts related furniture and decorations (e.g., Hogwarts banners, magical paintings, cauldrons, etc.)
  • Magical props (wands, horcruxes, etc.)
  • Various locks (combination, magnetic, key locks) and keys
  • Maps, clues (written parchments), and riddles
  • Sounds effects and lights
  • If you use screens in your escape room, you could make use of our Harry Potter themed timer.

Puzzle Room 1: The Room of Requirement

Puzzle 1A: Bookshelf Horcrux

Prop List

  • Bookshelf
  • Several “magic” books with custom dust jackets
  • A diary (horcrux)
  • A wand
  • A parchment with a coded message

Instructions for Setup:

  1. Arrange the books on a bookshelf in a specific order.
  2. Place the diary hidden within the books.
  3. On the parchment, write a coded message that hints towards the order of the books.
  4. Place the wand in plain sight for the players to find.

The Puzzle:

Players should find the wand and the parchment. By deciphering the message on the parchment, they understand they need to arrange the books in that specific order. When this is done, the diary (the horcrux) is revealed.

Puzzle 1B: Lumos Challenge

Prop List:

  • Handheld blacklight
  • Hidden message on parchment written in invisible ink

Instructions for Setup:

  1. Write a cryptic message on a parchment using invisible ink, which will lead to a well-hidden Room of Requirement key.
  2. Conceal the blacklight in a visible location.

The Puzzle:
The team must discover the handheld blacklight and use it to reveal the hidden message on the parchment, guiding them to find the key.

Puzzle 1C: Enchanted Chess

Prop List:

  • Magnetic chessboard
  • Chess pieces
  • Small magnet
  • Metal key hidden in one of the chess pieces

Instructions for Setup

  1. Hide a metal key inside one of the chess pieces.
  2. Attach a small magnet to the underside of the chessboard.

The Puzzle

The players must figure out which chess piece includes the key; they can do this by moving the magnet and observing which piece it attracts.

Puzzle 2: The Forbidden Forest

Puzzle 2a: Invisible Footprints

Prop List:

  • UV pen
  • UV light
  • “Invisible” footprints made with UV ink
  • A locket (horcrux)

Instructions for Setup:

  1. Draw footprints with the UV pen across the room, leading to the hidden locket.
  2. Place the UV light somewhere accessible but slightly hidden.
  3. Hide the locket in a moderately difficult-to-find location.

The Puzzle:

Players should find the UV light; when turned off the room lights, the UV light reveals the “invisible” footprints. Following the footprints will lead players to the hidden locket (the horcrux).

Puzzle 2B: Marauder’s Map Trail

Prop List:

  • Map of the Forest (the Marauder’s Map)
  • Symbols in different tree locations
  • Sneakoscope (a horcrux)

Instructions for Setup:

  1. Create symbols in different tree locations that respectively align with the symbols marked on the map.
  2. Hide the Sneakoscope (horcrux) at one of the symbol locations.

The Puzzle:

By using the Marauder’s Map, players must interpret the symbols in the correct order to find the Sneakoscope.

Puzzle 2C: Beware of the Whomping Willow

Prop List:

  • Whomping Willow model with a trapdoor
  • Nest with a locket (horcrux)

Instructions for Setup:

  1. Hide locket (horcrux) inside a small nest.
  2. Fill the Whomping Willow model’s trapdoor with the nest.

The Puzzle:

Players must carefully retrieve the locket from the Whomping Willow’s trapdoor.

Puzzle 3: Gringotts Wizarding Bank

Puzzle 3A: Vault Combination Lock

Prop List:

  • A small vault or safe with a combination lock
  • Three separate clues hinting toward the correct combination numbers
  • A cup (horcrux)

Instructions for Set Up:

  1. Set the combination of the lock and note it.
  2. Distribute the clues for the combination around the room.
  3. Inside the safe, place the cup (the horcrux).

The Puzzle:

Players will find the clues to the combination lock. Once the correct sequence has been used, the safe unlocks and players can retrieve the final horcrux.

Puzzle 3B: Wizard Money Exchange

Prop List:

  • Various denominations of Wizard money (galleons, sickles, knuts)
  • A price list for various items
  • A bill for several items
  • A vault key

Instructions for Setup

  1. Create a “bill” for multiple items and make a list of prices for each item in a combination of galleons, sickles, and knuts.
  2. Hide the vault key.
  3. Set a riddle giving a hint about which items from the bill to count.

The Puzzle

The team must correctly solve the riddle to find out which items to count from the bill, then add those to find the correct total. If the total matches the price list total, it leads them to the key location.

Puzzle 3C: Potion Mixing

Prop List:

  • Multi-colored potions (water dyed with food coloring)
  • A coded message (recipe) to create a specific color mixture
  • A hidden horcrux revealed by the correct potion combination

Instructions for Setup

  1. Create a coded message guiding how to mix the potions in a specific order.
  2. Make a hidden compartment that opens when the correct potion color is created.

The Puzzle

The team must decode the message, mix the potions in the correct order to create the required color. If successful, a hidden compartment opens revealing a horcrux. This is a safer way to incorporate the fun of potion making in the Harry Potter world.

Facilitator Instructions

  • Engage with participants and make sure they are well informed about the rules and background story.
  • Monitor the team through the camera, ensuring they are safe and have an enjoyable gameplay experience.
  • Offer hints judiciously, either when they seem stuck or ask for a clue, but also, try to challenge them to think more creatively if possible.
  • Reset the room accurately after each team, ensuring all props and objects are back to their original place and orientation.
  • Have fun! As a facilitator, your energy and enjoyment of the game will significantly impact the participants’ experience.
