Is there any way to play the game offline as a solo gsme or do you always need an internet connection?

No this game is online only. It is possible to play games solo, but in order to play you must be connected to the games servers. Since the game is built on the free to play model, they need to vallidate everything people o to prevent hacking. When you first boot the game up you will see that it logs you in and does some other networking checks. There may be some hacks for the PC version in the future that allow people to play the game offline, but for now you need to be connected to the internet in order to play fortnite
