Should Far Cry Have A Female Antagonist?

farcry villians

Over the past few years, Ubisoft has done an incredible job at promoting a more diverse lineup of characters. Players have had the option to choose between a male or female character in many of their games. While a gender selection is not unusual, having a fully scripted and voice acted campaign for both genders is less common and is a great win for diversity.

Farcry 6 is the most recent game in the franchise and with this comes one of the most diverse lineups of characters in the franchise so far. Nisa Gunduz delivered an incredible performance as female Dani along with several other female leaders of the rebellion to build a strong female presence that felt well balanced.

But What About The Villains?

Giancarlo Esposito is a fantastic actor who has the ability to turn from friendly and understanding to a twisted psychopath in a heartbeat. Without knowing a single thing about the antagonist in Farcry 6, you know you are in for a fairly dark and exciting story with him portraying the main villain.

His performance as Anton Castillo was as stellar as you would expect and having played the game, it is hard to think of anyone else to fill the role as well as he did. Which makes “what if” scenarios quite difficult to imagine for this game in particular.

Since Farcry 3, the lineup of villains has been absolutely insane. Each villain has been as dark and twisted in the last but in different ways. If you look at all of the previous villains showing up in the season pass, there is a noticeable trend.

The DLC for Farcry 6 will feature all of the memorable villains from the past three games.

All of the villains have been men. This is not a critique of these villains as they are all memorable psychopaths. It is just surprising that the franchise has promoted diversity so well but has yet to release a feature game with a female villain.

This is quite surprising when you consider there are gay and even trans characters in Farcry 6. How come they have yet to introduce a female villain in one of the main games?

Female Antagonists Have Been Just As Twisted

When it comes to female antagonists, the first one that comes to my mind is Frau Engel. One scene in Wolfenstein 2 still stands out to me as being one of the most messed up things I have ever seen in a game. Frau Engel beheads a woman you love before proceeding to dance the decapitated head in front of you and give you kisses. All while she laughs and jokes, clearly finding fun and humour in the situation.

Irene Engel has to be one of the cruelest and dark villains….I won’t say in the franchise because Hitler was a villain in multiple Wolfenstein games, but damn she is one twisted individual. You will despise her the moment her pompous ass appears on screen.

Casting a female lead in a video game really does not come with a compromise so long as the writing is good. This has been proven multiple times with games like Farcry, Assassins Creed, Last of Us (despite the basement dwellers and their cries of “politics” say) and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Many of the reviews for Farcry 6 have critiqued the game for doing nothing new and needing a revolution of its own. Perhaps it is time to diversify the villains as well as the gameplay!

Crysis “Remastered” texture quality leaves a lot to be desired

Remakes and remasters have their place in gaming and for the most part, are well recieved by gamers who want to replay older games with a fresh new coat of paint.

For developers, making a few engine tweaks to upgrade lighting, resolution, frame rate and other aspects that improve the overall appearance of the game can make for an easy win.

Not all studios take it as seriously as others however, which is evident with the latest remaster of the crysis trilogy. A franchise that was one renowned for it’s graphical fidelity and being a benchmark of a high end gaming rig when you could successfully run it.

Sadly, gamers on Reddit are reporting that the game looks pretty ugly when you look at it up close. Rather disappointing when you consider that increasing texture resolution is one of the main things a remaster should be doing to earn your hard earned money.

Huge leak gives us a better idea of what’s to come for the GTA Trilogy

News of a GTA Trilogy leaked quite some time before rockstar made it official. Even though the game is now officially announced, Rockstar have remained incredibly tight lipped about what the game is going to contain and more importantly, give us a peek at what it looks like.

The latest leak from Steam may not give us everything we had hoped for, but it sure does wet your appetite for more.

Eager gamers have been able to confirm that the game is coming to steam and on top of all this, found some system requirements and even a description of what the game Includes. Check out the info from the reddit post below.

List of PS5 Games With Adaptive Trigger Support

One of the most exciting features of the Dualsense controller on the PlayStation 5 is the addition of adaptive triggers. This piece of tech will apply a level of resistance to the L2 and R2 button so that when you press them, you feel as though the controller is pushing the trigger back against you.

This feature has been receiving strong support from Sony who have been making great use of the functionality for games released under PlayStation Studios. Many games that are being ported from the PS4 to the PS5 are getting haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support.

If you are someone who loves this feature as much as I do, you will likely be on the hunt to find some more games that support the feature. Here is a list of PS5 games with adaptive trigger support.

*There is no master list I know of to find a list of PS5 games that make use of adaptive trigger support so this list is manually updated. If there is a game I have forgotten, please leave a comment below.

Are Adaptive Triggers Different To Haptic Feedback?

Adaptive triggers and haptic feedback are two separate features that come as part of the new Dualsense controller for the PS5. Haptic feedback is a new and improved version of the classic rumble feature that we have seen in controllers for the past 20 years. Haptic feedback is far more precise as it allows for vibration to more realistically mimic real vibrations. It also allows vibration to be focussed more specifically on a certain part of the controller rather than just having the entire thing shake.

Adaptive triggers are specifically focused on the trigger buttons. This is the L2 and R2 button for the PlayStation controller layout. When you shoot a gun, the R2 button might flick a bit after the bullet has fired and you may also feel some resistance as you pull the trigger before the bullet fires. There are many uses for this feature and it is up to the developer to make use of it.

Why Don’t all PS5 Games Have Adaptive Trigger Support?

This is a rather puzzling one for people who are not involved in the game development community. Perhaps it is challenging to support and dev teams do not have the time to deal with it. It is strange that a game would ignore such a cool feature on the controller but sadly, it is one that we do see ignored from many native PS5 releases.

Microsoft Jokes About The PlayStation Buttons In Squid Game

For those who have watched the highly popular squid game on Netflix, you can’t help but notice a similarity between the icons on the soldier’s masks and a certain game controller.

Squid game may have been one character away from some legal problems but with the masks just using geometric shapes, we can assume they are fairly safe.

With many gamers highlighting how close the similarities are, the official Xbox account has tweeted a proposal for season two which is sure to give a few people a laugh.
