After the somewhat-surprising success of “Deadpool” and the undeniable success that “Captain America: Civil War” will certainly enjoy when it comes out in a few weeks, Marvel is dominating in movie theaters right now. With the disappointment that was “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” from the DC camp, it appears that Marvel has an even stronger hold on the superhero world on the big screen. That goes for the little screen, too, if you count the continued good reviews of “Daredevil” over on Netflix.
But what about the gaming world? Marvel characters appear in a number of top-notch video games, almost too numerous to mention. With that said, here are a few of our favorites that must be played.
Originally released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, this Activision title highlighted everything fans liked about Deadpool, particularly his sharp tongue. While the video game reviewers where lukewarm on the game, it got a much better review from fans of the character who picked up the game. It also shows exactly how well the movie was received as the game was rereleased last November, perhaps signaling the film’s coming success.
X2: Wolverine’s Revenge
No one will call this a perfect game, but it had lots to keep superhero and video games fans very happy. Start with Mark Hamill voicing Wolverine and then add in some stab-happy animations and you get a game with a lot going for it. The game was what Wolverine fans want from their hero: a chance to beat up lots of people. That’s exactly what this game brought. While the graphics left a little to be desired, it remains a replayable, altogether-fun title.
The Incredible Hulk
There are lots of Hulk games out there, but part of the fun of the Marvel universe is that you can find characters almost anywhere. One of the best Marvel-themed, spin-off games can be found at Gala Casino, where the site offers a mobile version of its Incredible Hulk slots. While it’s different from the typical superhero punch-up game, the Gala version offers players potentially great rewards, a fun time, and a chance to do the occasional Hulk Smash.
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
One of the early titles released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, this version more than anything simulated Spider-Man’s ability to soar through the city on a web. Combat is fast and fluid and includes a number of speedy attacks, along with a way to fight airborne villains while soaring through the skies. It’s a super-fun game that hits on everything Marvel characters offer players.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
The top spot on most lists on this topic, this well-received game gives players a ton of different options. It mixed Diablo-style combat with writers that really understood the Marvel universe, given that they included characters such as M.O.D.O.K., Black Panther, Moon Knight and Ghost Rider alongside the traditional favorites. For big comic book fans, the game allowed players to team up different groups, such as the X-Men and the Avengers, that provided not only bonus powers, but an increase in XP as a result. Overall, it’s a great title that can still be enjoyed if you’re an Xbox 360 owner.
